What the AFP Test measures
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is normally made by the liver at very low levels in adults. It can rise with some liver cancers and with chronic liver conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatitis, so it is often used for monitoring rather than diagnosis on its own.
Why it's done
- Monitoring people with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis for early signs of liver cancer, on medical advice
- Following treatment response in people already diagnosed with certain liver tumours
How to prepare
No fasting is needed — eat and drink normally. Wear something with sleeves that roll up easily, and keep a list of any medicines you take handy for your phlebotomist.
Understanding your result
AFP needs to be interpreted alongside imaging and your liver history — it can be raised by chronic liver disease even without cancer, and some liver cancers do not raise it at all. Your doctor is best placed to put your result in context.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same AFP test used in pregnancy screening?
AFP is also used in a different context during pregnancy screening, but this at-home test is intended for liver and tumour marker follow-up, not antenatal screening.
Does a normal AFP rule out liver cancer?
No. Some liver cancers do not raise AFP, so a normal result does not rule it out. Imaging and your doctor's assessment remain important.
